At our November 3rd Lunch & Meet at the Miami Shores Country Club, the Friendly Villagers welcomed Sharon Hawkins, President of the Rotary Club of Miami Shores, for an engaging presentation titled “The Power of Community.”

Sharon shared Rotary's mission of service above self and explained how the organization connects people of all generations through its various clubs. Interact introduces young people ages 12–18 to community service and leadership, while Rotaract provides adults ages 18 and older with opportunities for professional development, friendship, and meaningful service. Rotary clubs bring together community members and professionals committed to making a difference locally and around the world.

One of the highlights was the Miami Shores Rotary's “Fly Old Glory” program, launched in 2012. Through this patriotic fundraising initiative, Rotary members arrange for large American flags to be displayed in participating residents' front yards on holidays including President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day. Sharon explained how the club partners with local Boy Scouts to install the flags, combining patriotism, youth involvement, and community service. Contributions help support Rotary's local charitable projects.

Sharon's message reflected the Friendly Villagers' own commitment to strengthening community connections and giving back. When neighbors and organizations work together, even simple acts can make a lasting difference.

Originally from Colombia, Sharon is also an accomplished real estate professional with more than 25 years of experience in marketing, business consulting, and sales. She holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and an MBA.
