A moment with friends.

Updated: Dec 28, 2023

Our luncheons keep growing, creating a sweet buzz. It is such a relaxed atmosphere - the perfect break. Some stay for the whole program, and others stay long enough - it is all about friendship and support. A little time to catch your breath and find a little peace.

Tuesday, November 7th, was a special day. We opened the program with Aviva Abrams. After listening to her story, you understand she is a person of determination and resilience. Aviva is the owner of Aviva Pilates, one of our local businesses in downtown. She was introduced to this field due to an accident that left her gravely injured - with 10 broken bones to be exact, cognitive head injury, vestibular damage, and frontal lobe damage. With the assistance of therapy and a pilates regimen, she was able to transfrom her life. From then on, she was a believer and devoted her life to pilates - focusing in guiding individuals to meet their optimal health and wellness goals. She stylizes programs that may address injuries, vertigo, pre/post natal, and just overall wellness. I personally love pilates because at my age, it is simply better on my bones - low impact movement, good posture, and lots of stretching is essential. https://avivapilates.com/

At our meeting, we had two special guests. It wasn't planned, but the timing could not have been better. It certainly highlighted the significance of the impact our members are making in this community. We presented and awarded the Miami Shores Friendly Villagers first ever scholarship to Secquora Mignon. Secquora is a Doctors Charter School graduate. She is a lovely young woman and exemplifies our #befriendly motto. She met our criteria by completing over 900 volunteer hours and graduating with a 3.208 GPA. Secquora is a member of the Sister II Sister program, led by our club member, Sunja Leon. The organization focuses on preparation for life after highschool, being the best individual they can be - addresing etiquette, professionalism, manners, respect, and stressing the value of giving back to the community. Secquora was also celebrated by former Mayor Alice Burch, now a Doctors Charter School Trustee. We are very proud of Secquora and wish her the very best and remind her that our door is always open to her.

"Our goal is to steadily grow in membership and continue to make significant impact with different nonprofits and community programming in our neighborhood." -The Friendly Villagers Club

To close our program, it was important for our club to recognize and highlight our member, Alice Burch, being recently awarded with the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award. She has dedicated a large portion of her life to volunteer work and the betterment of our Village. Congratulations on the well deserved recognition! Thank you for all you do.
